Winter weddings are undeniably beautiful— flickering candlelight, cozy atmospheres, and (if you’re lucky) a dusting of frost or snow for that extra touch of magic. But planning a wedding in the colder months does come with a few logistical challenges that couples often overlook. If you're dreaming of a December "I do," here are a few key things to keep in mind to ensure your day runs smoothly and feels just as magical as you imagined.

  1. Timings - Plan for shorter days.

It may sound obvious, but shorter daylight hours can catch couples off guard. In the UK, the sun sets as early as 4 PM in December, which means your window for natural light photos is significantly reduced. If capturing beautiful, golden-hour couple portraits is a priority, you'll need to plan accordingly.

How to get around this? Be prepared to sneak out during your wedding breakfast for those dreamy, softly lit shots with your photographer. Having this conversation in advance will help ensure that your timeline accommodates the lighting conditions, so you don’t feel rushed or miss out on those all-important memories. Better yet, embrace the darkness like our beautiful couple Laura & David.

  1. Lighting - Create a warm and romantic glow

With the early sunset comes a unique opportunity—your wedding reception lighting will play an even bigger role in creating ambiance. And let’s be honest, is there anything more romantic than a candlelit dinner?

Layer up your lighting to create depth and warmth. Flickering candlelight on your tables will add a soft, intimate glow, while fairy lights draped across ceilings, trees, or beams will bring that extra touch of magic. If your venue allows, up-lighting or hanging lanterns can also help set the mood and enhance your décor beautifully.

  1. Budget wisely

Although it’s true that some venues offer lower rates in the winter months, December is a surprisingly popular time for weddings—especially in the run-up to Christmas—so don’t assume you’ll get a discounted rate. Always check your venue’s pricing for peak dates, as some locations may still charge premium rates during this festive period.

Also, keep in mind that if you're planning a wedding on or around a bank holiday, suppliers may charge extra. If your wedding requires setup or prep on a bank holiday itself, additional staff costs may apply. Be sure to factor this into your budget when making your plans.

  1. Think practically - Comfort is key!

Whilst an outdoor ceremony in the depths of winter might look utterly enchanting, but before committing, ask yourself: will your guests be comfortable? Standing outside in freezing temperatures, especially for an extended period, might not be ideal for everyone (think elderly guests or those with young children).

If you do have an outdoor element to your day—whether it’s your ceremony, a drinks reception, or even a sparkler send-off—consider adding practical touches to keep guests warm. Patio heaters, fire pits, cozy blankets, and even warm drinks like mulled wine or hot chocolate can make all the difference!

  1. Prepare your guests.

If any part of your wedding takes place outdoors, let your guests know in advance. No one wants to be caught off guard in a thin dress or without a warm coat when the temperature drops!

A simple note on your wedding website or invitations—suggesting chic cover-ups, warm layers, or even appropriate footwear—will ensure everyone is comfortable and can fully enjoy the day without freezing. After all, happy guests make for the best celebrations!
